Walk – Rosewood Nature Study Area

April 24 @ 9:00 am - 11:00 am

Event: Rosewood Nature Study Area

When: Wednesday, Apr 24, 2024 @ 09:00 AM – 11:00 AM

Leader(s); Instructor(s):
     Aylward, Mary @ 518-527-2720; mary.aylward@gmail.com

Starting Location: Rosewood Nature Study Area TH. Directions: Take I-80 East to Exit 20 (Sparks Blvd) and make a right. Stay on Sparks Blvd and it turns into Veterans Pkwy. Turn right onto Pembroke Dr and the Study Area is immediately on your left.

Description: We will take the self-guided tour of the Rosewood Nature Study
area. Once the old Rosewood golf course, it is currently under a restoration project run by the Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation (TMPF). Since 2019, the focus has been on wetland restoration with support from TMPF. Due to this endeavor water fowl have returned. There is a very interesting visitor center so I suggest you plan to stay after the walk to explore its contents and meet its resident tortoise! Our trail is approximately 2.5 miles and is an easy flat loop with 2 (optional) spurs. If you prefer to walk only 2 miles, you can omit those spurs. Along the way we may see cormorants, ducks, geese, mud hens, egrets and coots. Come see how the area is changing and returning to a natural and tranquil spot. There is very little shade, so bring your hat/visor and maybe your binoculars!

Route Type: Loop     Difficulty: 1 (1=Easy thru 10=Very Difficult)

Event Specific Information: Inside the visitor center there are bathrooms, plenty of pamphlets and notices of upcoming programs. This facility is public and you are welcome inside the center during normal operating hours and outside most of the time. Depending on your point of origin, you may find it easier to simply follow South McCarren all the way to Pembroke and turn right. You’ll see a lovely new sign welcoming you to the park.

What to Bring: Might want to consider bringing drinking water and using sunscreen.
