Starting Location: Rancho San Rafael Arboretum TH. Directions: From the junction of I-80 and I-580/US-395 in Reno, take I-80 west. Use the right lane to take exit 13 toward Downtown Reno/Virginia St. Turn right onto Sierra Street. Continue for 0.7 miles and turn left at Putnam Drive. Putnam becomes San Rafael Drive. Turn right into the first parking lot.

Description: The arboretum trail connects Rancho San Rafael Park, via the McCarran underpass tunnel, to the Basque Monument, the Nature Trail and the Evans Canyon Loop. From the ridge, we see wonderful views of the Truckee Meadows and the Sierra Mountains.  This hike is popular with local residents. The elevation gain is 764 feet. This is a moderate hike, however, there are some strenuous, rocky sections of the trail. In addition, with the recent moisture, parts of the trail may be muddy.

What to Bring: Wear shoes suitable for hiking on dirt trails with loose rocks and mud. Layer clothing as appropriate for the weather. Trekking poles for those who use them. Sun protection. Bring plenty of water, snack/lunch.
