Leader(s); Instructor(s):
Barnett, Harry @ 949-357-5750; harrybarnett@hotmail.com

Ride Sharing: North West Kohl’s Parking Lot @ 08:15 AM. Directions: 5150 Mae Anne Ave in Ridgeview Plaza

Starting Location: Spaulding Lake Trail TH. Directions: Take I-80 west over Donner Pass and exit on CA Route 20 toward Grass Valley. In 3.9 miles, turn right onto Forest Rte 18/Bowman Lake Road. The trailhead is 3.3 miles ahead, with a pullout on the right side of the road and plenty of room for parking. At the far end of the pullout is a gate across a dirt road (the start of the trail) that says Road Closed, Caution – Keep Clear. The only sign for the trail is a wooden sign on the tree to the right of the gate which says Spaulding Lake Trail. If you miss the turnout and get to Fuller Lake, you’ve gone too far; you’ll need to turn around and go back.

Description: Fordyce Falls is superior to any other waterfall on our Olli hikes. Lake Spaulding is located north of I-80, west of Donner Summit, between Cisco Grove and Emigrant Gap in the Tahoe National Forest. We start at about 5300′ elevation. After passing Lake Spaulding we arrive at Fordyce Falls in about five miles. Fordyce Creek cascades over large granite slabs at the falls area making it an excellent location to stop for lunch and dip your feet in the creek. Bring water shoes if you have them. Walking barefoot on the smooth granite slabs is not advised. Click HERE to view 2022 photos.

Distance(s): 9.5     Route Type: Out-and-Back

What to Bring: Wear shoes suitable for hiking on dirt trails with loose rocks and mud. Layer clothing as appropriate for the weather. Trekking poles for those who use them. Sun protection. Bring plenty of water, snack/lunch.
