Long Distance Hike – Castle Peak and Basin Peak

Ride Sharing: North West Kohl’s Parking Lot @ 07:15 AM. Directions: 5150 Mae Anne Ave in Ridgeview Plaza

Starting Location: Castle Peak Trailhead. Directions: I-80 west to Castle Peak/Boreal Ridge Road exit #176. Go east along the frontage road on the north side of the freeway. Park where the pavement ends.

Description: From the trailhead we will first hike to the top of Castle Pass. From there we follow the ridgeline to Castle Peak (9100′), one of the easiest peaks in the Tahoe area. The elevation gain is approximately 2,000 feet. Castle Peak offers views of Lassen, Mt. Diablo and the peaks of Desolation Wilderness. After a short break at Castle Peak, there is a 1.75 mile hike, again across the ridgeline, to the top of Basin Peak (9017′). We stop for lunch at Basin Peak and then descend passing abundant wildflowers into the valley below where the Peter Grubb Hut is located and follow the trail back over Castle Pass and down the other side.
